Covid-19: Driving Lessons, Driving Tests & Tier System Explained

Last Updated: 05/01/2021

UPDATE: 05.01.21

The government has today confirmed a national lockdown with the highest tier (tier 4) applied to all regions until further notice. This means driving lessons and driving tests have also been suspended until further notice.

If you are classed as a key-worker, unfortunately you can no longer apply for emergency driving lessons or driving test.

Please visit the official Government website by clicking here to find out the latest key-worker driving test news and updates.

Following on from the latest news that the Government is introducing a ‘tier’ system to help try and control the transmission of Covid-19 Coronavirus, many learner drivers will be wondering how this impacts them.

Put simply, the new tier system is designed to introduce more severe lockdowns by particular city or area, rather than a full national lockdown, based on the rate of confirmed cases in each particular city or region.

At this moment in time, there are 4 tiers with tier 1 being the least restrictive and tier 4 being the most restrictive.

As is the case with lockdown, each tier has a more severe type of restrictions for driving lessons and driving tests.

We have outlined below the restrictions to driving lessons and tests for each tier:

Tier 4:

  • Driving lessons NOT available
  • Practical driving tests NOT available
  • Theory driving test NOT available

Tier 3:

  • Driving lessons available
  • Practical driving tests available (reduced slots)
  • Theory driving test available (reduced slots)

Tier 2:

  • Driving lessons available
  • Practical driving tests available (reduced slots)
  • Theory driving test available (reduced slots)

Tier 1:

  • Driving lessons available
  • Practical driving tests available
  • Theory driving test available

If you are planning on taking driving lessons then we highly recommend you check with your driving instructor/school in plenty of time before each lesson to make sure any changes in tiers or restrictions wont affect your lessons(s).

If you are planning on booking your theory test or practical driving test (or looking to get a refund on a test) then we highly recommend you visit official Government websites to get the latest coronavirus and refund information:
